Senate Supports Tougher Drunken Driving Standard

The U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee approved a measure that would make 0.08 percent blood alcohol content the national standard for drunken driving, the Associated Press reported June 14.

The provision was included in the fiscal 2001 transportation spending bill approved by the Senate Appropriations Committee.

Under the measure, states that refuse to adopt the 0.08 standard would lose their share of highway trust fund money. "This is a reasonable, common sense standard that could save an estimated 500 lives a year, while still permitting adults to drink responsibly and moderately," said President Bill Clinton in applauding the actions of the Senate committee.

Two years ago, the Senate failed in a bid to establish 0.08 percent as the national standard for legal drunkenness. The same could happen again, since the national standard language is not included in the transportation spending bill passed last month by the U.S. House of Representatives.
